Golf Grass

What Is Golf Grass

Because the technology used in golf grass for golf has evolved, its popularity has grown across the country. There are many reasons for this. Among the other advantages of synthetic grass, golf grass makes for a game some golfers prefer. Turf has many benefits that make playing golf more enjoyable and give golfers and golf course maintenance teams more time to spend golfing instead of caring for the turf.

Because of how popular it is with golfers and golf course managers alike, golf grass can be an easy choice for many avid golfers or golf courses. There are a few options for putting greens, which can be used in backyards and at practice greens both indoors and outdoors at golf courses. There are also options for fairways, driving ranges, and clubhouse spaces. When installing artificial golf grass and putting greens, it’ s important to ensure it is done correctly. This helps with both the way the turf looks and the way it plays when you get out with your putter. A properly installed putting green practice area in the backyard can increase your property value as well.

Advantages of Golf Grass

Good drainage
When installed properly, golf grass has good drainage. This means that water won’ t pool on the surface of the turf, which can make practicing your golf game less fun. Limited muddy patches or standing water allows the ball to roll more easily, helping you continue playing the game you love. Turf putting greens are designed to drain off the main surface to keep them playable and able to be practiced on shortly after a rain.

Smooth, consistent surface
Golf grass offers a smooth, consistent surface for backyard practice putting greens and indoor clubhouse practice areas, among other golf grass applications. Country club like speeds can be maintained and exact practiced techniques can be ported to the course–don’ t just practice, but practice well!

Fewer maintenance needs
Unlike a professionally maintained course, an artificial putting green allows for greatly reduced watering, and minimal maintenance overall with golf grass. You won’ t need to buy seed or fertilizer, or mow. You will have fewer if any weeds to pull. Just keep the turf clean by rinsing or cleaning specific spots. Save time and money in the long run on these maintenance costs!

Durable
One of the primary benefits of golf grass is its durability. With durable turf, you won’ t need to replace or repair turf for years to come. When it’ s installed properly, turf can get more than a decade of use, with just minor maintenance. This means you, or your golf guests, can enjoy round after round of practice and play on golf grass for golf.

Modernise Your Golf Course with Golf Grass

Maintaining a golf course is no small feat: There are the greens to tend, the fairways to keep lush, and bunkers to rake, not to mention sustaining a delicate balance between surfaces that are fit to play on and wildlife conservation. It’s little wonder, then, that many golf course owners are opting for golf grass areas over natural grass in order to make the task of keeping their course fit for purpose simpler.

It’ s best to start small, laying golf grass for putting greens and leaving the fairways natural. This immediately cuts down on upkeep of the greens, as golf grass doesn’ t need mowing or watering. The smooth, clean surface is designed to mimic a professional standard green and enables balls to roll easily over the grass. These days artificial putting green is so advanced it can run to whatever speed on the stimp metre is required. One of the biggest challenges of owning and running a golf course is keeping pest control to a minimum. The use of golf grass means that burrowing animals such as moles, rabbits and rats cannot ruin the surface of your course.

Golf grass will last up to 15 years, making it an effective long term solution for a golf course. Because players are asked to respect certain rules when on the course, there is never a consistently high volume of traffic over the greens, and scuffs can be kept to a minimum. What’ s more, there’ s no need to feed, water or weed golf grass, so your golf course will look pristine year-round.

There are, of course, considerations to bear in mind when deciding whether to use golf grass, one of which is cost. Although there may be an initial outlay that seems expensive (depending on how much of the course you wish to transfer to golf grass and whether you change your driving range or practise greens) the maintenance costs are vastly reduced. Many golf course owners will want to consider the environmental impact of using golf grass. The good news is that by using fake turf, the damage caused by fertilisers and pesticides that are used to keep natural grass looking great disappear. Not only is the soil underneath the grass no longer being bombarded with chemicals, there is also a reduction in carbon emissions created by mowers. On top of that you will alleviate the need to water the greens, saving a considerable amount of water each year. The final consideration is quality. The best golf grass is up to 95% as good as regular turf on putting greens, but in order to ensure this quality it is vital to choose a reputable producer and a surface that has been tested and approved.

How to Choose the Best Golf Grass
1

Yarn type
Synthetic yarns can be straight or texturised. Straight yarns are self-explanatory – the fibre is straight – and texturised yarns are where the fibre is bent. Texturised yarns most closely mimic the grass on real grass greens so are favoured by many golfers. When searching for the best artificial putting green, always opt for a texturised yarn.Of course, you can always use straight yarns to form the fringe grass, longer grass surrounding your putting area, which is ideal for chipping and preventing the ball from rolling off the green.

2

Pile density
One of the first things to look for when searching for your putting green grass is the pile density. Generally, the denser the pile, the better, provided it’ s not so dense that it prevents the installation of an infill material. Anything around 80,000 stitches per square metre performs best. Dense piles are not only more hard-wearing and so capable of withstanding many hours of practice, but will also help to replicate a true ball roll speed. Sparse piles tend to flatten very quickly and once this happens you lose the realistic ball roll.

3

Pile direction
When choosing the best artificial putting green grass, it’ s important to choose a product that has the most realistic ball roll speed possible. The best artificial golfing experience will always be when your back garden putting most resembles playing on a real green. One of the most important factors when searching for the best putting grass is to choose a product with minimal pile direction. All domestic garden golf grass has a pile direction, meaning the fibres lean slightly in one direction. When it comes to putting green grass, excessive pile direction can mean an unrealistic ball roll speed, whereby the putting grass performs differently depending on which direction you are putting. The ball will roll faster when going with the pile direction and slower when rolling into the pile. The best way to check this is to request samples of your artificial putting green and look closely to check to see if the pile uniformly leans in one direction.

4

Strong backing
One of the most important things to look for when choosing the best golf grass for any application, not just golf putting greens, is the backing. You can have the strongest, best-performing yarn in the world but if the backing isn’ t up to scratch then it’ s irrelevant. The backing is what holds the entire lawn or green together. Without a strong backing the yarn will become detached, causing excessive loss of yarn, which in the case of a golf putting green will affect performance significantly. There are a couple of ways in which you can find out whether a backing material is up to scratch. Ask your chosen supplier for the specification and check to see how much latex is found within the grass. You should look for over 900 grams per square metre. Probably the best way to check the quality of the backing is by performing the pull test, as shown in the video below.

5

Microns matter
A micron is a unit of measurement equal to a millionth of a metre. The thickness of synthetic fibres is measured in microns. The micron measurement of an artificial fibre has a vital influence on how your golf grass will perform. In terms of putting green grass it will affect longevity, durability and performance. To find the micron thickness of an artificial putting green yarn, we’ d recommend checking the manufacturer’ s specification. We recommend opting for a thicker fibre for best all round performance and durability. For more in-depth information on fibre thickness, please see our previous article.

6

Aesthetics count
Of course, it’ s not all about performance. There’ s no doubt about it, you’ ll also want your putting green turf to look good. It’ s likely to be a key part of your outdoor space so ensuring it looks realistic and blends in with the surroundings of your garden is very important.

Artificial Golf Grass Installation Tips

Install your putting green cup before unrolling your turf
One of the most important features of any putting green is the holes themselves. These should be concreted into position before you unroll your putting turf. You can use a ready-mix mortar or manually mix ballast and cement to form your concrete. The cup should be surrounded in concrete, leaving a 2-3mm lip from the top of the cup. This lip will allow enough height to cover the backing material, whilst leaving the length of the pile proud of the edge of the cup, allowing the ball to roll in.

Ensure your putting green cups are level
And while we’ re talking about putting green cups, one of the biggest installation mistakes we’ ve seen made is not ensuring that the putting cups are level. We’ d recommend using a boat level to ensure this is done correctly. Simply place the level on top of the cup and position it so that the bubble is in the centre, and then it can be secured into position using concrete.

Cutting in your putting green cups should be the last thing you cut
It’ s important to remember the approximate position of the holes before unrolling your turf, for easy location when it comes to cutting in your putting holes. Cutting in your putting green holes should be the last thing you cut. Why? Because if you haven’ t quite positioned your turf correctly, or if you make a mistake cutting in the perimeter, moving your turf to adjust it will mean that you’ re left with a hole in your turf in a place where you don’ t want it! By cutting in the perimeter first, you have the option to potentially shift the turf and give yourself another attempt at cutting. It is possible to repair holes cut in the middle of your putting green but, for a first-timer, it can be difficult to make the repair invisible. Once you are happy with the perimeter, you can locate the holes by tapping in the approximate location and listening for a hollow sound. Test you have found the hole by piercing the turf with a small incision and if you don’ t hit anything solid you know you’ ve found the hole. The turf can be easily removed by using the plastic cup as a cutting guide. Bonus tip: Keep the offcut and place it at the bottom of the hole; this will prevent sand infill falling to the bottom of the cup, and you can also remove the offcut for easy cleaning.

Allow your artificial putting grass time to acclimatise
This may seem like a strange thing to do, but it’ s actually an important part of the installation process. We recommend that you allow around 24 hours for your turf to ‘acclimatise’. This acclimatisation period allows the backing on the turf to ‘relax’ a little and makes positioning and cutting your grass easier. Artificial grass is supplied and transported in rolls, either 2m or 4m in width. The grass is wrapped tightly on the roll and, as the backing material has a memory-like quality, when you first unroll your turf it may have creases and ripples running through it from the time it spent rolled up. The acclimatisation process gives the backing material time to settle down and the creases and ripples will start to disappear. This means it will be easier to achieve a crease-free finish to your putting green.

Always use a sharp knife
When fitting your artificial putting grass, you need to be very careful to ensure that you cut it correctly. One slip of the knife could potentially spoil your installation. When cutting artificial grass, we recommend that you use a stanley knife – and the blades will need to be sharp. Most artificial putting grass has a tough latex backing which can be difficult to cut through, particularly with a blunt knife. Don’ t be afraid to keep replacing your cutting blade to ensure you always have a sharp knife. We’ d also recommend that you experiment both with flat and hooked blades. Hooked blades are designed specifically for cutting flooring materials and you may find your putting turf is easier to cut with one.

Ensure the edges of putting green grass are secure
The last thing you want is be tripping up on the edges of your turf. So, it makes sense to ensure the edges are properly secure. You can use various forms of edge restraint. These include treated timber, plastic lumber, concrete haunching and metal edging. Whichever method you opt for, you’ ll need to ensure that the edges of your grass have been fixed down correctly. In the case of timber and plastic lumber, this will likely mean using galvanized nails, spaced roughly 20cm apart.

Use plenty of kiln-dried sand infill
We’ ve always praised the merits of using a kiln-dried sand infill on all artificial grass applications; however, we recommend it even more with artificial putting green turf. We’ d recommend filling your putting green turf with as much sand as you can get in, leaving just the tips of the yarn visible. Depending on the pile length of your turf, this could normally be anything from 2kg to 4kg per square metre.

How To Clean Your Synthetic Golf Grass

Brush the green
After removing branches, leaves, and any other visible debris, brush your green to keep the grass blades upright. This step will help ensure that the synthetic turf maintains a quality ball roll. Brushing will also keep the turf performing well after constant foot traffic. A brush made especially for synthetic turf or a soft rake can be used on your green. Brush carefully to avoid damaging your putting green.

Rinse and hose the turf
Once you’ve removed all trash and visible debris, rinse your artificial turf putting green to help keep debris, pollen, and dust from building up. Rinse your turf once a month to clear out debris between the fine blades of your synthetic turf. There’s no need to use any chemicals.

Use a power broom
Under constant foot traffic, artificial grass blades can start to lie flat and lose their vibrancy. Using a power broom helps fluff artificial grass turf. Power brooms also help keep the grass standing in an upright position.

Cleanup after pets
When there’s pet waste on your turf, it’s best to remove it as soon as you see it. Hose and rinse the areas following the cleanup. It’s important to clean after pets regularly to ensure that your synthetic putting grass remains clean and odor-free.

Clean minor stains
The key to cleaning minor stains is to act quickly. One of the benefits of synthetic turf is that it’s stain-resistant, which makes cleaning up after spills easy. Eco-friendly soap or a small amount of vinegar can be used to remove minor spots and mildew on your synthetic grass putting green.

Remove weeds
While rare, it is possible for weeds to grow through artificial turf. Weeds can sometimes make their way to the surface through cracks, small holes, and around edges. Be sure to remove them as soon as you see them. Though synthetic turf requires minimal maintenance, it’s still crucial to have it periodically cleaned in order to ensure that it’s beautiful, functional and retains its value for as long as possible.
